About COTA Features

Dear COTA members and friends, with the revision of the COTA E-News, the following special columns are introduced:

COTA Spotlight - Promoting top COTA contributors

Founded in 1996, COTA has been constantly growing as one of the largest associations for transportation researchers and engineers oversea and building stronger connections among transportation professionals from China and all around the world. Many people have contributed to COTA’s success. In the series of COTA spotlight stories, COTA would love to acknowledge these figures for their outstanding service and continuing supports to the COTA community.

COTA Faculty Highlight - Introducing COTA faculty members (by COTA Student Chapter)

The mission of COTA student chapter is to promote communication and connections between students and professionals. Toward this goal, COTA initiate a series of faculty highlight stories. Each month, COTA faculty spotlight will feature one faculty from China originally but current working in the US or holding an academic position in China. The feature stories will cover the faculty’s background, current research, and graduate research assistantship openings. Through this effort, COTA hopes to provide more opportunities to our student members. The stories will be posted in the E-News and also be available on the COTA website.

Yongxi Huang
Dr. Yongxi (Eric) Huang

Dr. Yongxi (Eric) Huang (Assistant Professor, Clemson University)

Bio:
Dr Huang is an Assistant Professor in Transportation in the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering at Clemson University. He received Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with minor in Applied Mathematics from UC, Davis in 2010, M.S. in Transportation Engineering from National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2005, and B.S. in Civil Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China in 2003.

To share with COTA community:
I was civil engineering with concentration in structural engineering when I was at HUST. I was not sure what would be my true interest when I was preparing my graduate school applications. But, during the summer internship in junior year, one thing I was sure that I was not interested in having structural engineering as my career. I like something more macro with a system of analytics than micro. Within Civil Engineering, I figured that transportation will better fit my appetite. So I applied a few transportation programs in US and Singapore. I was lucky to be accepted to NUS. That is how I started my joyful journey in the field of transportation. Along the way, I met many respectable scholars and professors, who generously offer genuine mentorship and helps in every way. In particular, I truly appreciate my five years of PhD study at UC Davis for their supportive environment and outstanding faculty. I was blessed to work with my Ph.D. advisor Dr. Yueyue Fan. She trained me to a quality scholar, helped me realize how appreciative to be a professor, and granted me maximum freedom to explore research interests and career opportunities. Just like the process of figuring out what I want to do in graduate school, I was not very clear my career passion when I was in PhD program. The two summer internships in both private sector and non-profit organization , not only broadened the breadth of my knowledge, but also helped me realize how much I enjoy working in academia for the intellectual stimulating and collegial environment. When I became a professor, I create the same purely collegial environment to my students within my limits. I’ve been very fortunate to work with my talented Ph.D. students, through which we have also established life-long professional relationship and friendships.

My advice to students would be - when you’re in the process of figuring out what would be the best for you, just try every possibility out! Go with your gut feeling!

My research focuses on formulation and solutions of complex transport networks and on bridging the gap between the theory and practice for real-world large-scale transportation-infrastructure-energy problems, with an emphasis on fundamental challenges in the use of large-scale data and travel behaviors on complex networks. These fundamental challenges rise in many transportation applications while achieving the economic viability, reliability, urban mobility, and integration with energy and natural resource systems. I use a variety of optimization techniques and optimization solution methods in my research, coupled with geographic information systems (GIS), microeconomics, and simulations. I have been active in transportation and operations research communities in publishing in leading academic journals, serving as guest editors for special issues on alternative fuel vehicle transport systems (e.g., Transportation Research, Part C), and chairing technical sessions in national and international conferences.
